Jamaica is hot practically all year long - there’s no getting around it! During the summer months, though? Things seem to increase ten-fold. This year has had some of the highest temperatures in history so far and we can bet that the beaming sun will continue to blast UV Rays as the months go on. So what can you do to protect your skin? Here are some skin care essentials that you can rely on to keep your skin hydrated so you can go outside and enjoy the next beach party with no worries!

Sunscreen

Use sunscreen if you plan to go outside during the peak of the day when the sun is high and the rays are hard to avoid. One with a high SPF is perfect for our climate. The higher the SPF (sun protection factor) of the sunscreen, the more protection you get from harmful UVB Rays. UVB Rays cause sunburn and increases the risk of skin cancer, so sunscreen is a must-have! Most sunscreens now also come in a child-friendly container for easy application.

After Sun Creams/Gels

Even after using the strongest SPF sunscreen you can find you still need to give your skin some extra care. After care lotions, or gels such as aloe vera can act as an extra moisturizer and help hydrate your skin after exposure. Products with witch hazel for face are also a must-have in your skincare routine.

Sunscreen Lip Balm

Yes, you read that correctly. Just as with any other part of your skin - your lips need to be protected from extreme sun exposure. Similarly to sunscreen lotions, lip balms now have SPF to keep your lips soft while you go about your sunny day!

Cleansers and Toners

During the summer days when you’re exposed to a lot of sun you want to ensure that the cleansers and toners you use are gentle on your skin. The last thing you need is to have even more moisture removed or use a product that causes irritation. Depending on your lifestyle or skin-type, you might want a cleanser that you can use on the go that requires no rinsing and is hydrating such as the Garnier SkinActive Micellar Cleanser or the Garnier Micellar Foaming Cleanser. These products are great for sensitive and dry skin and even make awesome acne skin care products.

For regular use, cleansers such as Cetaphil soap and Neutrogena Cleansing Towelettes are great options. You might consider using just a toner in the morning to start your day off with a clean, refreshed face and then using both your cleanser and toner at night as part of your bedtime routine.

Moisturizers with SPF

Looking for one product that will several jobs done? The Neutrogena SPF 30 Moisturizer not only moisturizes and protects from the sun, it also evens out your skin tone and reduces fine lines. It’s more than just a summer must have - it’s all-year staple since it’s perfect for daily use!

Face Masks/Scrubs

You can purchase them or make them yourself - using different ingredients for different purposes. These masks can help to rehydrate your skin, remove dead cells, enjoy proper blood flow and are just a great way to enjoy some ‘you time’. Here are a few easy recipes you can use to make your own:

Vitamin E

Whether ingested or applied topically, Vitamin E is one of those supplements that do wonders for your skin. In addition to increasing the effectiveness of your sunscreen’s SPF, it helps to keep your skin hydrated and moisturized, and can reduce sun damage.

You can still enjoy the outdoors and keep your skin looking fresh and hydrated - you just need to keep your essentials on hand. What are some items in your skincare kit?
